You may compare TravelKon travel eSIMs before departure and install the selected plan in advance, only to be met with eSIM Plan Already in Use when you try to activate it overseas. It’s the kind of message that tends to appear at the worst possible moment, right when you expect everything to just work. A small detail, easily overlooked, often sits behind it.
What This Really Means
eSIM Plan Already in Use usually means the QR code has already downloaded a profile. Check the phone’s SIM settings for a new or unfamiliar line before rescanning the code, deleting an eSIM or resetting anything.
| What You Find | What It Usually Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
|
A new or unfamiliar line |
The eSIM is installed |
Enable it and select it for data |
|
A profile with no signal |
Installation succeeded, but connection is incomplete |
Check data, roaming and location |
|
No matching profile |
The code may have been used on another phone, or installation did not finish correctly |
Check other devices, then contact support |
|
A previously deleted profile |
The original code may not be reusable |

Installed Does Not Always Mean Connected
An eSIM passes through several stages before mobile data works:
- Downloaded: The profile is stored on the phone.
- Enabled: The eSIM line is switched on.
- Selected: The phone is using that line for mobile data.
- Configured: Data roaming or an APN is enabled if the plan requires it.
- Registered: The phone has connected to a supported network at the destination.
The error can appear after the first stage, even when the remaining stages are incomplete. The profile may already be installed but switched off, hidden under an unfamiliar name or waiting to connect overseas.
Plan validity can also start at different points. Some plans begin when installed, while others start after the first connection to a supported network. Check the original product information before making further changes.
First, Check Whether the eSIM Is Installed
A travel eSIM may not appear under the destination or retailer’s name. It can use the underlying network provider’s name or a generic label such as Secondary, Travel, Business, Mobile Data or Personal.
Multiple stored lines are normal. Compatible iPhones can hold eight or more eSIMs, while eligible Pixel phones can use 2 eSIM profiles simultaneously when the operator supports the feature.
On an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Service, Mobile Data or Cellular, depending on the device language and region.
- Review every line listed under SIMs or mobile plans.
- Tap any unfamiliar line.
- Check whether Turn On This Line is enabled.
- Rename the line once it has been identified.
On a Google Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Select Network and Internet.
- Tap SIMs.
- Review the physical SIM and eSIM profiles.
- Select the suspected travel profile.
- Check whether Use SIM or Use this SIM is enabled.
On a Samsung Galaxy Phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Select SIM manager or SIM card manager.
- Review the profiles listed under eSIMs.
- Turn on the matching travel profile.
Samsung menus can differ slightly by model, region and software version. If no eSIM section appears, confirm that the exact device variant supports eSIM.
On other Android phones, search Settings for SIM, eSIM, mobile network or SIM manager. If you’re unsure where to look, this step-by-step guide shows how to find an installed eSIM profile across both iPhone and Android devices.
Confirm the Profile Using Its ICCID

If several profiles have unclear names, compare their ICCIDs. The ICCID is the profile’s unique SIM identifier and may appear in the installation email or order details.
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and scroll to the eSIM sections. For Android, select the profile in SIM settings or check About phone > SIM status. Availability varies between manufacturers.
Compare only the ending digits and never share the complete ICCID publicly.
If the Profile Is Visible
Select the eSIM and complete the remaining connection settings:
- Turn on the eSIM line.
- Select it as the mobile data SIM.
- Enable data roaming if the plan instructions require it.
- Keep data roaming off on the Australian home line unless international roaming is intentional.
- Confirm that you are inside the plan’s coverage area.
- Check whether a specific APN is required.
If the settings appear correct but there is no service, turn Aeroplane Mode on and off, restart the phone and temporarily disable any VPN. Also check for phone software or carrier settings updates.
The eSIM may remain without service until it reaches a covered destination. No signal before departure does not necessarily indicate an installation failure.
But If the Profile Is Not Visible
Consider whether the QR code was scanned on another phone. A travel companion, older device or phone used for a test installation may now hold the profile.
Check the SIM settings on every possible device and compare any unfamiliar profile with the order information. An eSIM installed on another device normally cannot be copied to a second phone by scanning the same QR code.
The QR image is best treated as a profile download credential rather than a reusable picture. If you want to understand how eSIM QR codes work, our guide can help you get started. It walks you through the key installation and transfer conditions to keep in mind before moving a plan.
Messages such as these can describe the same underlying situation:
- eSIM already installed
- eSIM already in use
- eSIM code has already been used
- Activation code already in use
- Invalid eSIM code
Removing the profile from another phone does not automatically return the QR code to an unused state. Contact support before attempting a transfer or fresh installation.
Do Not Delete the Profile Yet
Deleting a visible eSIM can remove its only usable copy. However, it does not necessarily reset the QR code or make the plan available for another installation.
Avoid erasing eSIMs, resetting the phone or performing a network reset as an opening step. A network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi settings without restoring a consumed activation code.
Read our guide on what happens if you delete an eSIM before removing the profile. If it has already been erased, reinstalling an eSIM after deletion depends on the plan that you are using.
When to Contact Our Support Team
Contact support when:
- No matching profile appears on any possible device.
- The eSIM may have been installed on another phone.
- The profile was deleted.
- The line remains disconnected after the safe checks.
- The QR code was never scanned but still appears used.
Send:
- Order number and purchasing email
- Destination and plan name
- Phone make, model and software version
- Screenshot of the complete error
- Screenshot of the SIM list with personal details concealed
- Whether the QR code was scanned or the profile deleted
If a newly issued profile also fails, confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is not locked to another carrier.
Note: Never post the QR code, complete ICCID, payment details, passwords or one-time passcodes publicly.
FAQs
Does Plan Already in Use Mean the eSIM Is Installed?
Usually, but not always. It commonly means the QR code has already downloaded a profile. Check every line in the phone’s SIM settings and compare the ICCID ending digits.
Can One eSIM QR Code Be Used on Two Phones?
Usually not. If you are asking whether an eSIM QR code can be used twice, assume it cannot unless the provider explicitly confirms reuse.
Should the eSIM Be Deleted and Installed Again?
Not until support confirms that reinstallation is available. Deleting the profile may remove its only usable copy without making the original QR code available again.
What Details Should Be Sent to Support?
Send the order number, purchasing email, plan name, destination, device model, software version and screenshots of the error and SIM list. Also confirm whether the QR code was scanned on another device or whether the profile was deleted.
