Mexico Digital Nomad Guide and eSIM Tips
Getting a Mexican Temporary Resident Visa is only the first half of the process. Australians must also exchange the passport visa for a residence card after arrival, meet the financial test published for Australian applicants and distinguish foreign remote work from paid activity in Mexico. A Mexico eSIM can provide mobile data for airport transfers, rideshare bookings, banking and backup internet while those first arrival tasks are completed. Does Mexico Have a Digital Nomad Visa? Mexico does not have an immigration category officially called a digital nomad visa. The route commonly used by financially independent remote workers is the Temporary Resident Visa. It covers stays longer than 180 days and less than four years. The passport visa remains valid for six months and permits one entry. After entering Mexico, you must exchange it for a Temporary Resident Card within 30 days. The residence card then allows you to live in Mexico and make multiple entries during its validity. The standard Temporary Resident Visa does not permit payment from a Mexican person, company or organisation. Mexican-paid work requires permission from the National Institute of Migration, known as INM. How Much Income or Savings Do Australians Need? Australians can qualify through monthly income or personal savings and investments. Income Route You need after-tax income of approximately AUD$4,150 per month for every one of the previous six months. Use payslips and Australian bank statements that show matching deposits. The evidence must establish regular income that belongs to you. Savings or Investment Route You need an average monthly balance of approximately AUD$106,850 for every month during the previous 12 months. The savings or investments must be held in your name through an accepted financial institution. Cryptocurrency is not accepted. Superannuation only counts when you already have access to the funds, and company accounts usually do not qualify as personal financial resources. You must meet the threshold in every required month. A larger annual average does not compensate for a month below the minimum. Family applications require additional financial evidence for each dependant; use the current embassy page for the amount applying when you lodge. Visitor Status or Temporary Residence? Australian passport holders can enter Mexico as visitors without obtaining a visa in advance for a stay below 180 days. The immigration officer sets the authorised period at entry, so the full 180 days is not automatic. How to Apply From Australia 1. Book Through MiConsulado Book your appointment through Mexico’s MiConsulado system. Every adult applicant needs an appointment, although a family booking can cover one adult and one child. 2. Attend the Embassy in Canberra The visa cannot be issued entirely online or by post. You must attend the Embassy of Mexico in Canberra with your application, passport, photograph and printed evidence. 3. Complete the Interview and Biometrics The embassy takes your photograph and fingerprints, conducts the interview and collects the visa fee. Your passport and application documents remain with the embassy during processing. 4. Receive the Decision The embassy notifies applicants within five days of the interview. Your passport can then be collected by an authorised person or returned using an accepted prepaid envelope. Start at least one month before departure because appointment availability can create a longer delay. 5. Enter Mexico Use the visa within its six-month validity period. The passport visa permits one entry. 6. Exchange It for a Residence Card Apply to INM within 30 days of arriving. The first Temporary Resident Card is normally issued for one year and can be renewed within the temporary-residence limit.
