Why Does My Travel eSIM Say SOS Only?

The flight is over, the terminal Wi-Fi has disappeared and the rideshare app is waiting for a pick-up location. A travel eSIM is installed, yet SOS Only has replaced the network name. If support confirms that the plan excludes the destination, you can compare TravelKon travel eSIMs, but do not replace the plan or delete anything yet. The status can belong to the Australian SIM, the travel eSIM or voice service, not necessarily the data connection needed for maps and messages.

The Reason You’re Getting SOS

SOS Only means the displayed line is not registered for normal service, although another network may still carry an emergency call. Turn off Wi-Fi and test a webpage, then identify which line shows SOS. If the travel eSIM is installed, on and selected for data, do not delete it.

Run This Quick Check First

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi.
  2. Open a new webpage or refresh a map.
  3. Check which SIM is selected for mobile data.
  4. Open Control Centre or SIM settings and inspect the status of both lines.
  5. Confirm that the travel eSIM appears and is turned on.

If data works, the travel eSIM is connected. SOS probably belongs to the Australian line or unavailable voice service on a data-only plan. Otherwise, match the problem below.

SOS Only or Emergency Calls Only

The displayed line is not registered for normal service

Identify whether it is the home SIM or travel eSIM

No Service or Searching

The line has not joined a mobile network

Check arrival, coverage, line status and network selection

Signal bars but no internet

Registration succeeded, but data is not passing

Check the data line, roaming, allowance and APN

Home SIM shows SOS, but data works

The travel eSIM may be working normally

Leave the working travel profile alone

Stop network troubleshooting and check the installation instructions

Note: eSIM no signal describes a registration problem; signal bars without internet point to data settings, allowance or APN.

Confirm Arrival, Coverage and Plan Status

Many plans cannot register before reaching a covered country. Activation timing varies, so follow the order email and product page.

  • Confirm that the phone is inside a covered country. Transit zones and borders can expose it to an excluded neighbouring network.
  • Check the product page for supported local networks. Do not assume every visible carrier or 5G network is included.
  • Move away from underground platforms, lifts and concrete interiors. Try beside a window or outdoors where safe.
  • Ask someone using the same local network whether they have service. If both devices have failed, check for an outage over Wi-Fi.
  • Confirm that the plan is active, within its validity period and has data remaining.
  • Confirm that the regional model is unlocked and check your phone’s eSIM support.

An eSIM network not available before arrival can be expected. If it remains unavailable in a covered destination, continue to line selection.

Select the TravelKon Travel eSIM for Mobile Data

Installation does not automatically make the eSIM the data source. The phone may still use the Australian SIM.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Mobile or Settings > Cellular.
  2. Under SIMs, tap the travel eSIM and enable Turn On This Line.
  3. Return to the previous screen, tap Mobile Data or Cellular Data, then select the travel eSIM.
  4. Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching unless the plan requires it. Otherwise, data can move to the Australian line and incur roaming charges.

Control Centre can show both lines. Check the label beside each network rather than judging the travel eSIM from one SOS indicator.

On Google Pixel

Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, choose the travel eSIM, enable Use SIM, then assign Mobile data to that line. Menu wording can vary by Android version.

On Samsung Galaxy

Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager, enable the travel eSIM, then choose it under Mobile data. Verify the regional model if the profile is absent.

Please remember that most of our travel eSIMs are data-only, although some products include calls or texts. Voice-related SOS can therefore coexist with working WhatsApp, maps and browser data.

If SOS is on the Australian physical SIM and that number is needed, check its roaming access and whether it appears in the settings. For No SIM, power off before reinserting the physical SIM. Leave the working travel eSIM alone.

Toggle the Line and Aeroplane Mode Safely

sos esim
  1. Turn the travel line off in SIM settings.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. Enable Aeroplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
  4. Allow a few minutes for network registration.
  5. Restart the phone once if the eSIM is still not connecting.

Do not delete the eSIM, factory reset the phone, test it on another device, or select an unlisted network. These actions can create another problem.

Check Software and Carrier Settings

Use stable Wi-Fi before checking updates.

On iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update. Then open Settings > General > About and install a service-provider settings update if prompted.

On Pixel, open Settings > System > Software updates. On Galaxy, open Settings > Software update. Menu labels can vary. Restart once after an update before continuing.

Updates will not repair an expired plan, unsupported destination or provider-side provisioning fault.

Turn On Data Roaming for the Travel Line

Travel eSIMs often use destination roaming partners, so roaming may need to be enabled on the travel line.

On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile/Cellular > travel eSIM > Mobile Data Options. For Pixel users, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > travel eSIM > Roaming. On Galaxy, check Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.

Enable roaming only as required by the product instructions. Keep it off on the Australian SIM unless the home carrier’s terms and intended use justify it.

Keep Network Selection Automatic

Leave network selection on Automatic. If it fails, choose only a network listed in the product instructions or provided by support. A visible carrier is not necessarily authorised.

If every supported network rejects the line, support must check plan status, account restrictions or provisioning.

Check the APN Only After Network Registration

An APN matters when the travel line shows signal but data does not pass. It rarely fixes genuine SOS Only or No Service because the phone has not joined a network.

Enter only the supplied value, preserve capitalisation and leave unspecified fields untouched. You can review APN settings before editing. Set date and time to automatic after crossing time zones.

Reset Network Settings Only as a Controlled Last Resort

This reset can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and VPN settings while leaving coverage or provisioning unchanged. Do not use it after one failed reconnect.

Consider it only after the provider confirms that:

  • The plan is active and correctly provisioned.
  • The destination and selected network are supported.
  • The phone is compatible and not barred.
  • Roaming and APN settings are correct.

Save any Wi-Fi and VPN details, then follow the manufacturer’s current instructions or support guidance.

Know When to Stop and Contact Support

Contact our support team when the profile remains unregistered after coverage, line selection, roaming, network selection, updates and one safe reconnect. Contact support sooner if the eSIM is missing, the destination is excluded or the account may be inactive.

Prepare the order number, exact phone model, operating-system version, current city and country, both SIM lines’ status and a redacted screenshot. Hide the EID, ICCID, QR code and activation details from public posts or unsecured messages.

Only the provider can confirm payment, restrictions and provisioning. If the profile will not register, our guide on how to fix no service after installing an eSIM can help with further troubleshooting. For a wider problem, work through general eSIM fixes without deleting the line.

Prepare Before the Next Flight

  • Install and label the eSIM before departure when the product instructions permit it.
  • Save the order email and setup instructions for offline access.
  • Record the covered countries and supported networks.
  • Check when the plan begins and how long it remains valid.
  • Confirm whether the plan is data-only or includes calls and texts.
  • Save support details before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.

FAQs

Does SOS Only Mean the eSIM Is Broken?

No. The displayed line is not registered for normal service. Causes include location, an outage, network selection, a disabled line, roaming, account status or the Australian SIM rather than the travel eSIM.

Should Data Roaming Be On for a Travel eSIM?

Usually, yes, when the plan uses a destination partner network, but follow the product instructions. Enable it on the travel eSIM only. Keep roaming off on the Australian SIM unless its carrier terms justify it.

Can Emergency Calls Still Work When the Phone Shows SOS?

Possibly. SOS means another available network may carry an emergency call, but connection is not guaranteed without network coverage. Use the official emergency number for the country being visited and never place a test call.

When Should TravelKon Support Be Contacted?

Contact support after checking coverage, plan status, compatibility, data selection, roaming, network selection, updates and one safe reconnect. Contact support immediately if the profile is missing or the instructions conflict with the phone’s menus.
