Lantern-lit floats and winter fireworks give Chichibu Night Festival its appeal, but your return journey determines how late you can stay. Reliable mobile data helps you check train schedules, track service changes and find your way back to the station. That said, consider Japan eSIM plans for the Chichibu journey to stay connected throughout the evening, and plan your return before the festivities begin.
When Is Chichibu Night Festival in 2026?
Chichibu Night Festival runs on Wednesday 2 December and Thursday 3 December 2026. Thursday is the main day while Wednesday is the smaller eve festival. The Chichibu festival follows fixed annual dates, rather than shifting to a weekend.
| Date | Festival Pattern | Best Planning Choice |
| Wednesday 2 December | Eve festival, traditionally featuring four yatai floats | Consider a day trip for easier browsing |
| Thursday 3 December | Main festival, traditionally featuring all six floats and the night procession | Choose an early exit, verified late service or overnight stay |
Choose Thursday for the main procession, or Wednesday for easier browsing.
What to See: Six Floats and the Night Procession
Also called Chichibu Yomatsuri, the festival honours the deities of Chichibu Shrine. Its present form has continued for more than 300 years, developing alongside the area’s historic silk trade.
Chichibu joins Kyoto’s Gion and Takayama among Japan’s three great float festivals, distinguished by its winter setting.
The main-day tradition features 6 floats, consisting of two kasaboko and four yatai. The kasaboko have ceremonial flower-parasol origins; the yatai carry musicians and support performances.
Look for Details in Daylight
Look for carved creatures and embroidered curtains in daylight. Kamimachi has carp embroidery on its rear curtain; Motomachi features a treasure ship and Daruma decoration.
The kasaboko’s parasol structures are normally removed before the procession; do not expect complete towering flower parasols.
Kabuki and dance also feature; check the programme for performances.
Notice the Movement and the Silence
During girimawashi, crews use levers and a pivoting technique to turn floats whose wheels cannot steer normally. Watch from behind the viewing boundary and leave room for crews.
The procession also includes a quiet passage associated with Suwa Shrine. The tradition connects with a legend about the deity Myoken, the dragon deity of Mount Buko and Suwa’s spirit. When the music stops, respect the silence.
The ascent of Dangozaka towards the Otabisho is a major climax, but the narrow area has restricted viewing access. Choose a float-focused or fireworks-focused position rather than assuming one spot provides both.
Getting to Chichibu from Tokyo
Chichibu sits in Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. The two principal rail approaches arrive at different stations.
| Route | Arrival Station | Journey Benchmark and Ticket Considerations |
| Ikebukuro → Seibu Limited Express Laview | Seibu-Chichibu | Approximately 80 minutes; reserved seat required |
| Tokyo Station → JR service to Kumagaya → Chichibu Railway | Chichibu | Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes–2 hours 20 minutes, depending on the JR service and connection |
Allow extra time for Tokyo connections and festival queues.
Book Laview with the Correct Tickets
All Laview seats are reserved. You need the regular travel fare plus a limited express ticket.
The current adult Ikebukuro–Seibu-Chichibu limited express supplement is ¥900 each way, additional to the regular fare. Seibu is a private operator; do not assume a JR Pass covers this service.
Standard advance sales begin 1 month before departure. That points to 2 November for 2 December and 3 November for 3 December, subject to special-service conditions. Book both directions.
Check the last available train and any onward connections to your accommodation. Our guide to train travel in Japan covers ticket options and other practical details to help you plan your journey.
Know Your Stations and Landmarks
Seibu-Chichibu Station and Chichibu Station are different stations. Save the correct one for your return journey.
| Landmark | Purpose |
| Seibu-Chichibu Station | Seibu Railway arrival and departure for the Ikebukuro route |
| Chichibu Station | Chichibu Railway station, nearer Chichibu Shrine |
| Chichibu Shrine | Daylight orientation point and established float-viewing area |
| Chichibu Matsuri Kaikan | Festival Hall near the shrine |
| Dangozaka and Otabisho | Hill ascent and ceremonial destination in the City Hall area |
From Seibu-Chichibu, follow your walking directions towards the shrine, normally about 15 minutes. Chichibu Station is nearer the shrine. Follow staff-directed diversions on festival night.
Choose Your Return Plan Before the Festival

Choose your return arrangement before choosing a late viewing position. The hill ascent, fireworks finish and last useful Tokyo connection may not fit together.
| Plan | Suitable For | Main Trade-Off |
| Leave before the late climax | Visitors prioritising a manageable Tokyo day trip | Missing part of the evening |
| Take a confirmed late service | Visitors with a verified train, reservation where required and onward connection | Limited flexibility if streets or queues delay departure |
| Stay overnight | Visitors prioritising the late main-day experience | Accommodation, access and check-in require advance planning |
For a day trip, work backwards from your booked train and include the station approach, queue time and a margin for controlled pedestrian movement. Set an alarm for leaving your viewing position.
Viewing, Tickets and a Cold December Evening
The Chichibu Night Festival attracted 248,000 visitors in 2025, giving visitors an idea of how busy the celebrations can get. The figure covers the festival as a whole rather than the number of people gathered in one location.
Choose a Viewing Area You Can Leave Easily
Use these established viewing areas to narrow your choice, then check the 2026 map for closures and access conditions.
| Area | Viewing Priority | Practical Limitation |
| Chichibu Shrine | Daylight float details and shrine visits; evening floats where permitted | Check the procession timetable before settling in |
| Chichibu Station forecourt | Established float and fireworks viewing area | Keep station entrances and pedestrian routes clear |
| Honmachi and Nakamachi streets | Passing floats and street atmosphere | Crowds can make changing viewpoints difficult |
| Seibu-Chichibu Station forecourt | Established fireworks viewing area near the Ikebukuro departure station | Do not assume a close float view |
| Dangozaka and Otabisho | Hill ascent and ceremonial climax | Narrow, controlled areas; reserved-seat access has separate terms |
For a Tokyo day trip, choose a permitted viewing spot near your station approach. Save venue and station details offline, and check our guide to Google Maps data usage to plan your navigation without using more mobile data than necessary.
Public Viewing and Reserved Seats
Permitted public-area viewing does not require a reserved-seat ticket. Controlled areas and Dangozaka have separate access restrictions.
The advance 2026 announcement lists Otabisho folding-chair seats at ¥4,000, including tax, with postage additional. The provisional announcement schedules full sales details for 10 October; check the updated location, admission and purchase conditions.
Dress for Standing Still
Chichibu’s December average daily maximum is 11.2°C, with an average daily minimum of −1.6°C. These are 1991–2020 climate normals, not a forecast for either festival night.
For Japan in December, prepare for prolonged standing with insulating layers, gloves, a warm hat and comfortable footwear. Our Japan packing list for every season covers other essentials to help you prepare for the wider trip.
A Practical Day-Trip Sequence and Phone Checklist
Build your day around this sequence:
- Arrive in daylight. Locate the correct return station, then head towards the shrine.
- Inspect floats and performances. Follow the published programme and permitted viewing areas.
- Take an indoor break. Consider the Festival Hall, followed by a seated meal.
- Choose one evening position. Prioritise floats or fireworks, with your exit in mind.
- Leave at the agreed time. Allow your station margin even if another highlight is beginning.
Take a Break at the Festival Hall and Eat Early
Chichibu Matsuri Kaikan, near the shrine, explains the festival through float replicas, film and projection. It offers an indoor alternative to extended outdoor viewing.
Its standard December opening hours are 10 am–5 pm, with admission ending at 4.30 pm. Confirm festival-day arrangements and admission charges before including it.
For your food break, look for these local dishes:
- Miso potato: Battered, deep-fried potato with a salty-sweet miso sauce.
- Soba: Buckwheat noodles, suited to a seated lunch before the evening.
- Waraji katsudon: A rice bowl topped with large, sauce-flavoured pork cutlets.
These are regional examples, not a confirmed 2026 stall list. Check restaurant holiday hours and current menus.
For a warming drink, amazake is sweet and rice-based; recipes can contain alcohol. Ask about ingredients if avoiding alcohol, and check payment methods before ordering.
Prepare Your Phone Before Leaving Tokyo
Save your reservations, accommodation address and meeting points somewhere accessible. Our guide to Japan travel apps for tourists covers useful tools for checking train routes, translating local instructions and getting around unfamiliar areas.
Carry a charged power bank and retain offline route information. Crowds can slow mobile connections; keep digital tickets available in the format required for inspection.
Choose a Japan-covered plan valid for your entire stay, with enough data for maps, messages and rail updates. Check device compatibility, activation rules and current inclusions before purchase.
