FaceTime Not Working with an International eSIM: How to Fix It

The hotel Wi-Fi drops halfway through a FaceTime call home, and the next call fails even though maps still load on the iPhone. The Australian line may show no service while the travel eSIM appears connected, making it difficult to tell which setting is responsible. If the plan does not cover the destination, you can compare TravelKon travel eSIMs, but first determine whether the failure sits with mobile data, FaceTime or the Australian number.

Start With this Quick Fix

Turn off Wi-Fi and load a new webpage. If it opens, check Settings > Apps > FaceTime and confirm that FaceTime has mobile-data permission and the intended Apple Account email or Australian number is selected. However, if the webpage does not open, repair the travel eSIM connection first and leave both mobile profiles installed.

Confirm Mobile Data Works First

FaceTime uses an internet connection. A data-only eSIM can carry FaceTime audio and video without supplying a new mobile number, but it cannot carry a call when its data connection has failed.

Start with This Check

  • Turn off Wi-Fi.
  • Open Settings > Mobile or Settings > Cellular.
  • Tap Mobile Data or Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM.
  • Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching unless the intended dual-SIM setup requires it.
  • Load a webpage that was not already open.

Match the result to the correct troubleshooting layer:

What HappensLikely ProblemSafest First Move

Webpages and FaceTime both fail

Travel eSIM data connection

Check the selected data line, coverage, roaming and data allowance

Webpages work, but FaceTime fails

FaceTime permission, account, restriction or service issue

Check mobile-data access and FaceTime contact selections

“Waiting for Activation” appears

Phone-number or Apple Account activation

Check the home line, SMS capability, time and account status

Email works, but the Australian number does not

Home-number verification

Use the email or troubleshoot the Australian carrier line

Only one contact cannot be reached

Recipient, address or contact-level problem

Test another known FaceTime user

FaceTime settings are missing

Screen Time restriction or regional availability

Check allowed apps and local FaceTime availability

If both the webpage and FaceTime fail, stop changing FaceTime settings. Confirm that the phone is in a covered destination, the plan is active, data remains available and the travel line has joined a supported network. If everything checks out but the issue remains, follow our step-by-step guide on how to fix an eSIM with no service before exploring other fixes.

If FaceTime Works on Wi-Fi but Not on eSIM Data

A successful browser test proves that mobile data works, but it does not prove that FaceTime can use it.

  1. Open Settings > Mobile or Settings > Cellular.
  2. Scroll to the list of apps using mobile data.
  3. Make sure FaceTime is enabled.
  4. Open the travel eSIM and turn on Data Roaming only when the plan instructions require it.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off and make one test call to a known FaceTime user.

If the call connects, the fault was the app permission or line configuration rather than the eSIM profile. But if the call still fails, continue to the contact selections.

Check FaceTime Contact Selections

A travel eSIM FaceTime setup has three separate parts:

  • Data transport: The travel eSIM or Wi-Fi carries the call.
  • Contact identity: A phone number or Apple Account email identifies the caller.
  • Number activation: The Australian carrier verifies its number, normally through SMS.

Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime. Older iOS versions may show Settings > FaceTime without the Apps step. Then:

  1. Confirm that FaceTime is turned on.
  2. Sign in with the intended Apple Account if required.
  3. Under You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At, select the Australian number, intended email or both.
  4. Under Caller ID, choose the identity contacts should see when a new call starts.

Most data-only travel plans do not add a usable voice number to FaceTime. Do not wait for a travel eSIM number to appear unless the exact product includes a mobile number and supports the required service.

Check the product’s calls, texts, destination coverage, data allowance, validity and fair-use conditions. This also applies when you make calls with a data-only eSIM: the plan supplies data, while the app or account supplies the calling identity.

If the Australian Number Is Missing from FaceTime

The number requires an active SIM or eSIM associated with the Australian mobile service. If it is grey, unticked or spinning, select a verified Apple Account email so FaceTime can work while the number is being checked.

Contacts may see the email rather than the familiar number. Send a short message before calling if recognition is needed, and select the same email under Caller ID. This is also the safest way to use FaceTime abroad when carrier SMS or roaming access is intentionally unavailable.

Keep the Home Line Available Only When Needed

The Australian SIM or eSIM may need to remain active when the usual number must receive texts, one-time passwords or complete phone-number activation. Keeping it enabled does not mean it should provide mobile data.

For a controlled dual-SIM setup:

  • Keep Turn On This Line enabled for the Australian line only when the number is needed.
  • Select the travel eSIM under Mobile Data or Cellular Data.
  • Turn Data Roaming off on the Australian line unless the home carrier’s plan and intended use require it.
  • Leave Allow Mobile Data Switching off unless there is a specific reason to use it.
  • Check the carrier’s call, SMS, voicemail and roaming-pass terms.

An activation SMS, outgoing call, voicemail access, background data or automatic roaming pass may create charges. Usage reporting can also be delayed. Follow the practical controls to avoid roaming charges overseas before leaving the Australian line enabled.

If the number is unnecessary, turn off the home line and use a verified Apple Account email. Confirm that the email remains selected after changing the line settings.

Fix FaceTime Waiting for Activation

Use this sequence only after Wi-Fi or travel-eSIM data is working:

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime and turn FaceTime off.
  3. Restart the iPhone once.
  4. Return to FaceTime settings and turn it on.
  5. Sign in with the intended Apple Account if prompted.
  6. Wait for the selected number or email to gain a tick.

Phone-number activation can send an international SMS through the Australian carrier and may create a charge. Carrier verification can take up to 24 hours, so repeated toggling will not accelerate it. If FaceTime Activation Unsuccessful remains beside the number, confirm that the Australian service is active, can send international SMS and has sufficient credit or a valid account status.

Check Apple’s System Status page in a browser as well. An outage cannot be repaired through eSIM settings. FaceTime availability can also vary by country, region or carrier.

Avoid these high-risk or low-value shortcuts:

  • Do not delete an installed travel eSIM or Australian eSIM.
  • Do not factory-reset the iPhone.
  • Do not reset all network settings as an opening step.
  • Do not repeatedly sign out of the Apple Account.
  • Do not install the travel profile on another phone as a test.
  • Do not enable roaming on the Australian line without checking the carrier terms.

Deleting a working profile can create a replacement-code problem. If the travel profile is genuinely absent, follow the steps to install an eSIM on iPhone instead of altering FaceTime settings.

Who to Contact When Things Don’t Work

Send the problem to the service controlling the failed layer:

  • Contact TravelKon when webpages fail over the travel eSIM, the profile will not register, the plan does not cover the destination or the supplied instructions conflict with the phone.
  • Contact your Australian carrier when the home number cannot send an activation SMS, remains unticked after the activation window or roaming charges and service restrictions are unclear.
  • Contact Apple Support when data works, FaceTime has mobile-data permission, the intended number or email is selected and the app still cannot make or receive calls.

Share the iPhone model, iOS version, current country, exact error, selected data line, FaceTime contact selections and the result of the Wi-Fi-off webpage test. And as always, keep the QR code, activation code, EID and full ICCID private.

FAQs

Does FaceTime Work with a Data-Only eSIM?

Yes. The eSIM supplies internet data while FaceTime uses a selected Apple Account email or activated phone number as the caller identity. The plan does not need to include standard mobile calls for FaceTime to work.

Why Is FaceTime Waiting for Activation Overseas?

The phone may lack working data, the date and time may be wrong, the Apple Account may need verification, or the Australian number may be waiting for a carrier SMS. Use working Wi-Fi or travel-eSIM data, set time automatically and restart FaceTime once before waiting through the verification window.

Can an Apple Account Email Be Used Instead of a Phone Number?

Yes. Select a verified email under Settings > Apps > FaceTime > You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At, then choose it under Caller ID for outgoing calls. Contacts will see that email rather than the Australian number.

Does FaceTime Use Travel eSIM Data?

Yes, when the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data and Wi-Fi is off. FaceTime must also be allowed to use mobile data. When Wi-Fi is connected, the iPhone will normally use Wi-Fi for the call instead.
