What Is RCS Messaging? iPhone, Android and Travel eSIMs

RCS, short for Rich Communication Services, brings features such as high-quality photo sharing, read receipts, typing indicators and improved group chats to everyday text messaging. It works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, provided both parties have RCS enabled on supported services. However, things can get a little complicated when travelling overseas.

While travel SIM and eSIM options can help you stay connected, a data-only eSIM does not automatically enable RCS on your regular number. Understanding how your messaging number and mobile data connection work together can help you avoid unexpected messaging issues abroad.

How Is RCS Different from SMS and iMessage?

RCS is a messaging standard used through compatible apps, including Google Messages and Apple’s Messages app. It is not a separate app you must download.

FeatureRCSSMS/MMSiMessage
ConnectionWi-Fi or mobile data, with supported RCS serviceCarrier text service; MMS commonly also needs dataWi-Fi or mobile data
Photos and videosHigher-quality mediaSMS carries text; MMS supports media with service limitsHigh-resolution media
Read receipts and typing indicatorsAvailable in supported conversationsNo RCS-style read receipts or typing indicatorsAvailable, subject to settings
CompatibilitySupported Android and iPhone servicesSupported carrier text servicesPeople using iMessage on Apple devices
End-to-end encryptionAvailable in eligible conversationsNoYes

A green bubble on iPhone does not identify SMS. RCS and SMS/MMS both appear green while iMessage appears blue. Check the conversation’s service label where displayed.

What Happens in RCS Group Chats?

RCS supports richer group conversations and media sharing, with controls that depend on the app and participants.

Everyone needs RCS enabled to use the group’s RCS features. If someone lacks support, an SMS/MMS group may still be possible, with different features and potentially different charges.

Note: Do not assume that every Android or iPhone group offers identical controls or file limits.

What Does a Travel eSIM Change?

Think of your setup as two separate parts:

  • Messaging number: the number registered with the supported messaging service.
  • Internet connection: the Wi-Fi network or SIM supplying mobile data.

Buying data changes the second part. However, it does not automatically establish the first.

QuestionAnswer
Does a data-only travel eSIM automatically provide a usable RCS number? No
Does travel data activate RCS on an unsupported iPhone line?No
Does a working internet connection prove RCS is working? No—registration and recipient support still matter
Can RCS use Wi-Fi?Yes, through an eligible registered service
Does this guide confirm home-number RCS through a separate travel eSIM?No—that combination needs device-specific verification

Why Can RCS Work on Android but Not iPhone?

Google Messages can receive RCS service from Google or a carrier. On iPhone, Apple requires a carrier plan that supports RCS on iPhone.

That means Android RCS availability on a network does not establish iPhone availability on the same network.

How Do You Check RCS Messaging on iPhone?

You need iOS 18 or later and a supporting carrier plan.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Messages.
  2. Select RCS Messaging, if available, and turn it on.
  3. Allow activation time.
  4. Open a conversation with a known RCS-enabled contact and inspect its sending service.

If the setting is missing, carrier or regional support may be unavailable. A working travel eSIM does not resolve that limitation.

What Should Australian iPhone Users Know?

Currently, Apple’s Australian carrier-feature list does not list RCS for amaysim, Optus, Telstra or Vodafone.

That is a finding from Apple’s documentation, rather than a device test or a statement of permanent non-support. Confirm your exact plan with your carrier before relying on RCS overseas.

Blue-bubble conversations use iMessage rather than RCS, so connection issues may require a different fix. Check the iMessage settings to review when using a travel eSIM to troubleshoot registration and connectivity.

How Do You Check RCS on Android?

These instructions apply to Google Messages.

  1. Update Google Messages and make it your default SMS app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Open Messages settings → RCS chats.
  4. Enable RCS if needed.
  5. Check the intended number where displayed and confirm the status says Connected.

If verification is requested, the intended line must be able to receive the verification SMS. For a verification retry problem lasting more than 30 minutes, Google recommends Details → Submit feedback.

How Do You Know a Message Uses RCS?

Check the compose field and send control before sending. Google Messages distinguishes internet delivery from SMS and MMS.

Being connected does not guarantee every message will use RCS. The recipient must also have RCS available and enabled. Similarly, a message marked “sent” is not necessarily “delivered” or “read”.

Can You Keep Your Home Number and Use Travel Data?

rcs message

Apple’s Dual SIM instructions explain how to select a messaging number separately from a mobile-data line. They do not guarantee that every home-number RCS service works through every travel eSIM.

Google’s dual-SIM troubleshooting recommends matching the calling and data SIM. Travellers using different lines for those roles therefore need to verify their configuration.

Do not switch mobile data to your home SIM overseas just to try that fix without checking roaming charges.

Test the Actual Setup

Before departure, test the parts available to you:

  1. Record the registered number, RCS status and fallback setting.
  2. Exchange messages with a known RCS-enabled contact over Wi-Fi.
  3. If the travel plan permits use at home, select it for data and turn Wi-Fi off.
  4. Confirm internet access, then repeat the conversation test.
  5. Check the sending method and whether the registered number changed.

For a destination-only plan, repeat the mobile-data test after arrival rather than relying on a successful Wi-Fi test to confirm everything works. If you use dual SIMs, selecting your mobile-data SIM correctly helps ensure your travel eSIM handles mobile data.

Does RCS Cost Money Overseas?

Google Messages uses Wi-Fi or mobile data for RCS. Mobile-data allowances and paid Wi-Fi can therefore affect the cost. Apple also advises that carrier fees may apply.

Check three things before travelling:

  • Data: which SIM carries the connection and how much media you expect to send.
  • Verification: whether your number may need verification abroad.
  • Fallback: what your home carrier charges for sending SMS or MMS overseas.

Turning off home-line data roaming does not settle every call or text charge. Check those separately with your carrier.

Is RCS End-to-End Encrypted?

Check whether the conversation is marked as encrypted. RCS does not automatically mean your messages are encrypted.

Supported iPhone conversations show Encrypted with a lock. Google Messages also uses a lock indicator. In groups, every participant must meet the relevant requirements.

Cross-platform encryption began rolling out in beta in May 2026 for supported iPhones on iOS 26.5 and Android devices using the latest Google Messages. Availability depends on the services involved.

Note: SMS/MMS fallback is not end-to-end encrypted.

What Should You Do When RCS Stops Working?

Identify the problem first rather than repeatedly turning RCS off and on.

SymptomFirst checks
RCS fails for every contactInternet access, app updates, default SMS app, registered number and RCS status
RCS fails for one contactWhether that contact has RCS enabled; compare with a known working contact
Text works but photos or videos failAvailable data, app updates and whether the message remains RCS
RCS works over Wi-Fi but fails through travel dataSelected data SIM, internet access with Wi-Fi off and RCS status after switching
Status remains on verification retryCorrect number and SMS reception; follow Google’s feedback instructions

These checks narrow the problem but they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves. A queued message is not proof that the travel eSIM has failed.

Check SMS/MMS Fallback Before Resending

In Google Messages, open profile → Messages settings → RCS chats.

Review Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS) or Resend messages, depending on the interface.

Disabling automatic conversion can leave a message waiting. Manually selecting SMS/MMS still uses that service and its applicable charges.

Google warns that SMS with a link can make media accessible through a public link outside Google’s control.

How Do You Turn Off RCS?

  • iPhone: Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging.
  • Google Messages: Profile → Messages settings → RCS chats.

Use the relevant toggle. Google advises against repeatedly switching RCS off and on because it can remove you from RCS groups.

Turning RCS off does not disable the underlying SMS service. Ordinary texts still require a supported active plan.

Can a Data-Only eSIM Receive Bank Verification Texts?

A data-only travel eSIM provides internet access but does not receive ordinary SMS messages sent to your home number. To receive those texts, your home number must remain accessible through a supported mobile service. Check whether you can receive SMS verification codes while using a travel eSIM separately from your RCS settings.

For personal conversations, agree on a backup messaging app before departure. WhatsApp works separately from RCS, but if your group plans to share photos, videos or make calls, check how much data these activities use with our guide to WhatsApp data usage.

Your RCS Checklist Before Travelling

  • Confirm RCS support for the intended number.
  • Check the registered number and connection status.
  • Select the intended mobile-data line.
  • Review SMS/MMS fallback and overseas charges.
  • Test a conversation and inspect its sending method.
  • Repeat checks that require destination coverage after arrival.
  • Agree on a backup contact method.

FAQs

Can RCS Work over Wi-Fi Abroad?

RCS supports Wi-Fi delivery, but your registered service must remain eligible. Wi-Fi does not supply missing carrier support or fix every registration problem.

Can a Data-Only Travel eSIM Receive Bank Verification Texts?

Not simply because it supplies internet access. Ordinary SMS addressed to your home number requires a supported way to receive messages on that service.

Is RCS the Same as WhatsApp?

No. RCS works through compatible phone messaging services. WhatsApp is a separate app.
