Wi-Fi Assist helps your iPhone use mobile data when Wi-Fi performs poorly. Connectivity Assist replaces it on the current interface, with its control under Settings → Wi-Fi.
For a traveller, the decision is whether to preserve a limited allowance or allow mobile assistance when hotel or airport Wi-Fi struggles. Find the control your phone displays, check the supplying SIM, then choose the behaviour that suits your trip.
Where Is Wi-Fi Assist on Your iPhone?
Check the name displayed on your phone:
| Feature Name | Where to Look |
| Connectivity Assist | Settings → Wi-Fi |
| Wi-Fi Assist | Settings → Mobile Service, Mobile Data or Cellular |
Apple’s iOS 27 documentation for iPhone settings outlines the current navigation path, while the legacy example uses an iPhone 14 Plus running iOS 26. Menu wording may vary by region.
Turn Connectivity Assist On or Off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi and ensure Wi-Fi is enabled.
- Scroll down to Connectivity Assist.
- Switch it off to stop this feature assisting Wi-Fi with mobile data, or on to allow assistance when supported.
Turn Off Wi-Fi Assist on the Older Interface
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Service, Mobile Data or Cellular.
- Scroll down to Wi-Fi Assist, below the app list.
- Switch it off.
Return to the same control to enable it again. If Wi-Fi Assist is missing from mobile data settings, check Wi-Fi settings for Connectivity Assist.
Restrict Assistance on One Network
You can make a separate choice for a particular hotel or airport network:
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Info button beside the connected network.
- Turn Use Connectivity Assist off.
This is useful when one network should retain its own router configuration, such as a router-based ad blocker, without changing your preference globally.
What Does Connectivity Assist Actually Change?
Connectivity Assist uses mobile data alongside Wi-Fi when that Wi-Fi connection is weak, busy or unable to reach the internet.
It does not strengthen the Wi-Fi signal or repair the network. A hotel connection can show strong signal bars while its internet service struggles, so mobile assistance provides another route for supported activity.
If Wi-Fi Assist was enabled before the software update, Connectivity Assist carries that enabled state forward. Check the control after updating rather than assuming the renamed feature starts disabled.
Turning assistance off limits that behaviour while Wi-Fi remains connected. Your phone can still use mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
Should Travellers Leave Wi-Fi Assist On or Off?
Turn assistance off if you want to conserve your data allowance and can manage without the extra support. Leave it on if uninterrupted access is more important and you’re comfortable using additional mobile data.
| Your Priority | Practical Choice | Trade-Off |
| Preserve a small remaining allowance | Turn assistance off | Connected Wi-Fi may continue struggling |
| Retrieve an essential booking or send an arrival message | Consider leaving assistance on | Supported activity may consume mobile data |
| Keep one network Wi-Fi-only | Disable its network-specific control | Assistance is restricted on that network |
Turning assistance off is not an absolute mobile-data block. If you need to prevent mobile-data consumption temporarily, switch Mobile Data/Cellular Data off separately.
Check Which SIM Supplies Data
Before assessing the effect on your travel allowance:
- Open Settings → Mobile Service/Mobile Data/Cellular.
- Open the Mobile Data or Cellular Data selection.
- Confirm that your intended travel line is selected.
If you are choosing an allowance, compare travel SIM and eSIM options against your destination, trip length and expected use.
At an airport, retrieving a booking may justify spending mobile data. At your accommodation, a non-urgent task may be better left until Wi-Fi improves. Leaving assistance enabled does not mean it constantly consumes data.
When Does the Roaming Exception Apply?

If preserving your allowance is the priority, disable assistance directly rather than relying on the roaming exception.
Connectivity Assist is not used during international roaming, in cellular Low Data Mode, or with some third-party audio and video streaming apps.
Being overseas does not, by itself, establish how your travel eSIM connection is classified. Follow the plan’s connection instructions, but do not infer assistance behaviour solely from a requirement to enable Data Roaming.
Before travelling, review our guide to settings that help prevent roaming charges so your home SIM doesn’t incur unexpected fees. Keep in mind that disabling roaming does not automatically cover every mobile charge, so check your settings and plan inclusions before departure.
How Is This Different From Wi-Fi Calling and Data Switching?
These features serve different purposes, particularly when using two active SIMs. Understanding how Cellular Data Switching works with two SIMs helps clarify how your phone chooses which connection to use for mobile data.
| Feature | Main Purpose |
| Connectivity Assist | Assist poor Wi-Fi with mobile data |
| Cellular Data Switching | Permit data use between SIM plans under supported conditions |
| Wi-Fi Calling | Support carrier voice calls over Wi-Fi |
Please remember that changing assistance does not configure switching between your home and travel plans. Review that choice separately.
If you plan to make calls over Wi-Fi while travelling, check whether your carrier supports the feature and how calls are charged. For setup instructions, see how to use Wi-Fi Calling on an iPhone before departure.
How Can You Check the Mobile Data Used?
Record the Feature Counter
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Find the mobile data usage figure associated with Connectivity Assist.
- Record the reading before using the connection.
- Check it after completing the task.
- Tap Reset Data Usage only when you intentionally want a new counting period.
On older software, inspect the Wi-Fi Assist entry in mobile data settings for a counter where available.
After checking the feature, check data used after leaving a weak Wi-Fi connection for overall allowance and top-up questions.
Interpret the Difference
If the counter reads 12 MB before opening a stalled booking page and 19 MB afterwards, the recorded increase is 7 MB. These figures are illustrative, not a typical consumption estimate.
An unchanged counter means no additional usage was recorded there during that interval. It does not prove Wi-Fi is healthy. Likewise, a change in total mobile usage should not automatically be attributed entirely to assistance.
When to Seek a Different Fix
Connectivity Assist cannot restore an unavailable cellular connection. If mobile data still fails with Wi-Fi turned off, follow our guide on troubleshooting a travel eSIM with no internet to identify the cause before changing the Connectivity Assist setting again.
FAQs
Why Is Wi-Fi Assist Missing From Mobile Data?
Look for Connectivity Assist in Settings → Wi-Fi. The current feature replaces the older control.
Does It Automatically Use Data During International Roaming?
No. Current documentation excludes international roaming. Your location alone does not establish your travel line’s classification.
Is It the Same as Wi-Fi Calling?
No. Wi-Fi Calling supports carrier voice calls; Connectivity Assist concerns internet connectivity.
Should Cellular Data Switching Also Be Disabled?
Treat that as a separate decision about your home and travel lines. Disabling one feature does not configure the other.
