2 Weeks in Japan Cost from Australia Explained

For two weeks in Japan from Australia, separate the cost of the trip from the spending money you will need after flights and hotels are paid. The worked budget below allows A$3,410 per person travelling solo or A$2,838 per person sharing, before flights. These are planning examples for 14 days and 13 nights, not booking quotes or guaranteed average prices.

Two weeks in Japan: a worked budget in Australian dollars

Updated 24 September 2026. This example follows Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo, with modest private accommodation, casual meals and public transport. Every amount in the table is an assumed allowance you can replace with your own quotes.

The solo example allows A$120 per room per night. The sharing example assumes two adults splitting an A$160 room, or A$80 each per night. These are different room budgets, not a fixed single-traveller surcharge.

Allowance per personSoloSharing a room
Accommodation, 13 nightsA$1,560A$1,040
Food, 14 days × A$50A$700A$700
Intercity trains, local transport and airport transfersA$400A$400
AttractionsA$250A$250
Mobile data allowanceA$40A$40
Laundry and incidental spendingA$150A$150
Subtotal, excluding flightsA$3,100A$2,580
Contingency, 10%A$310A$258
Total, excluding flightsA$3,410A$2,838

Peak-season hotels, premium dining, theme-park upgrades and additional long-distance excursions can take you above these allowances. Travel insurance, substantial shopping and flights are excluded. The mobile-data row is a budget allowance, not a quoted TravelKon plan price.

Add your actual flight cost

Add the return or multicity airfare you can actually book, including baggage and relevant taxes. For illustration only, adding an assumed A$1,400 airfare gives A$4,810 solo or A$4,238 per person sharing. A sale fare or peak-season departure can change that total substantially; compare your Australian departure city and exact dates.

How much spending money do you need after prepaying?

Do not count prepaid hotels and train tickets twice. In this example, food, attractions and incidentals total A$1,100 per person: A$700 + A$250 + A$150. Add any transport or mobile data you have not already paid for, plus shopping and a contingency. A spending-money figure is not the full trip budget.

For currency conversions, the RBA published A$1 = ¥111.96 on 23 September 2026. The rail example below uses a rounded planning rate of ¥110 per Australian dollar. Your card or cash provider’s exchange rate and fees will differ; check the current RBA reference rates when revising the budget.

Will a Japan Rail Pass save money on your route?

Price the journeys before buying a national pass. The SmartEX regular-season adult ordinary reserved Nozomi fare schedule lists Tokyo–Kyoto at ¥13,970, Kyoto–Shin-Osaka at ¥2,880 and Shin-Osaka–Tokyo at ¥14,520. Together, those legs cost ¥31,370, approximately A$285 at the rounded planning rate. Conventional trains between Kyoto and Osaka may cost less. See the SmartEX fare schedule, dated 1 April 2025 and checked on 24 September 2026.

That route alone is below the current ¥50,000 seven-day ordinary adult JR Pass price. Additional eligible travel would be needed to justify a pass, and the journeys must fit its validity. Nozomi services require a separate pass-holder ticket, so compare the trains you will use, not just the headline prices.

From 1 October 2026, overseas-agency ordinary adult passes rise to ¥53,000 for seven days and ¥84,000 for 14 days. Official direct-online prices remain ¥50,000 and ¥80,000 for now. Check the official JR Pass prices and purchase conditions before paying, as the purchase channel matters.

Flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka removes the return train journey to Tokyo. Compare the multicity airfare difference with the rail cost and the time saved before choosing your route.

Choose a few bases for a two-week trip rather than trying to fit all ten places below into one route. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka match the worked budget; other destinations require their own transport, time and accommodation allowance.

  • Tokyo: As the capital of Japan, Tokyo is a must-visit. Explore areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Asakusa, and don’t miss iconic spots like the Tokyo Skytree and the Meiji Shrine.
  • Kyoto: Known for its traditional temples, Kyoto is a cultural hub. Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), and the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, immersing yourself in the rich history and stunning landscapes.
  • Osaka: Famous for its street food and vibrant nightlife, Osaka is a foodie’s paradise. Visit Osaka Castle and spend time at Universal Studios Japan, where you can experience thrilling attractions and unique culinary delights.
  • Nara: Located near Kyoto, Nara is known for its friendly deer and the stunning Todai-ji Temple, which houses a massive bronze Buddha, providing a serene environment to connect with nature and history.
  • Hiroshima: Visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum to learn about the history of World War II, as well as the iconic Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Atomic Bomb Dome), gaining insight into the resilience of the city and its people.
  • Mount Fuji: Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a popular destination for hikers and photographers, and you can enjoy breathtaking views from nearby areas like Hakone or the Fuji Five Lakes, making for memorable experiences.
  • Hakone: Famous for its hot springs (onsen) and views of Mount Fuji, Hakone is a perfect place to relax, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum is a must-visit, blending art and nature seamlessly.
  • Nikko: Known for its ornate temples and beautiful natural scenery, Nikko is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Toshogu Shrine, showcasing intricate architecture nestled amidst lush landscapes.
  • Takayama: This historic town in the Japanese Alps is known for its well-preserved Edo-period streets and traditional festivals, and you can also explore the nearby Shirakawa-go village, famous for its unique thatched-roof houses, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rural heritage.
  • Sapporo: If you visit during the winter, Sapporo is famous for its annual Snow Festival. In other seasons, enjoy Sapporo’s beer museum and the local Hokkaido cuisine, making it a vibrant destination year-round.

Adding Hiroshima, the Japanese Alps or Hokkaido changes the route and cost. Reprice those journeys before assuming they fit the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka allowance.

Why eSIMs are the Smart Choice for Japan Travel

Budget for mobile data so maps, train searches and booking details are available when you need them. An eSIM avoids carrying a separate pocket Wi-Fi unit, while a physical SIM may suit a compatible phone without eSIM support. Check the device, coverage, data allowance and validity of the plan you choose.

Advantages of Using TravelKon eSIM/SIM Card in Japan

Read the installation and activation instructions before departure. Network access, hotspot support and the start of validity depend on the selected plan. Keep your accommodation address and essential booking details available offline while you set up.

Choosing between a travel SIM and pocket Wi-Fi

A SIM or eSIM connects the phone directly to a mobile network and does not need a separate router to be charged or returned. Pocket Wi-Fi can suit a group sharing one connection, but compare the rental, pickup or delivery arrangements, battery life and return requirements. Neither option guarantees a stronger signal everywhere.
