iCloud Private Relay and Travel eSIMs: Settings, Availability and Sign-In Issues

Your hotel booking opens in an app, but Safari keeps challenging your sign-in. It is easy to blame the connection, particularly when using a new travel SIM or eSIM overseas. Yet your phone’s privacy settings can also affect how websites behave.

Before changing any settings, check whether the problem affects one website, one network or your entire connection. A few simple checks could save you from an unnecessary reset.

What Does iCloud Private Relay Protect?

iCloud Private Relay is an iCloud+ privacy feature that helps hide your original IP address and Safari browsing activity from websites and network providers. Protected browsing passes through 2 separate relays, separating knowledge of your original IP address from the destination website.

As a result, websites receive a temporary IP address instead. Its scope also includes DNS resolution and insecure HTTP traffic from apps. However, that does not make it a full-device VPN covering every app connection.

Private Relay can also work over eSIM-provided mobile data. While a travel eSIM provides internet access overseas, Private Relay adds a separate layer of privacy to supported traffic without changing how the phone connects to the mobile network.

What Does It Leave Unprotected?

Private Relay does not hide your phone number or make a signed-in account anonymous. Websites can still recognise you through the account you use, even when Safari limits the information they receive about your connection.

Protecting your identity online also means knowing how to keep your phone number safe while travelling. Private Relay and phone-number security address different privacy risks, so neither replaces the precautions needed for the other.

How Do You Turn On iCloud Private Relay Before Travelling?

You need an iCloud+ subscription, including eligible access through Family Sharing.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings → your account name → iCloud.
  2. Select Private Relay.
  3. Turn Private Relay on.

Enable it separately on each device where you want protection.

Choose the Right IP Address Location

Under Private Relay → IP Address Location, choose:

  • Maintain General Location: retains an approximate location so websites can provide local content.
  • Use Country and Time Zone: provides a broader location within your country and time zone.

Neither option lets you select an arbitrary foreign country. Changing this setting is not a reliable way to unlock Australian services while overseas.

Before departure, check that your usual booking and account websites work with Private Relay enabled. You cannot confirm destination-network compatibility until you use that network.

Why Can Private Relay Become Unavailable Overseas?

Private Relay is unavailable in some countries and regions. When you enter an unsupported region, it automatically turns off and notifies you. It resumes when you return to a supported region.

A network can also be incompatible. Business, education and other filtered networks may require traffic monitoring that conflicts with Private Relay.

An unavailable notice therefore does not establish that your travel eSIM has failed. First check regional availability, the connected network and the feature’s current service status.

Is This a Safari Sign-In Issue or an eSIM Connection Issue?

Treat iCloud Private Relay not working as an observable issue rather than a confirmed root cause.

Start with this sequence:

  1. Test a trusted website and an app requiring fresh internet access. An already downloaded page does not prove connectivity.
  2. Identify the pattern. Note whether one Safari website fails or several services fail.
  3. If another connection is available, compare it. Try trusted Wi-Fi or your selected cellular line without changing privacy settings simultaneously.
What HappensWhat to Check Next
One Safari sign-in fails; other services loadTry the website-specific IP address exception
A notice identifies an incompatible networkTest Private Relay only on that network
Several websites and apps failInvestigate the underlying connection as well
Only a speed-test result looks lowerCompare actual browsing before changing settings

Sites using IP filtering or rate limits can behave differently with relay addresses. A repeated sign-in challenge is not proof that your eSIM lacks data.

Location labels can also mislead. In 2023 testing, median geolocation errors exceeded 1,000 miles in some countries for Private Relay IPv4 addresses assessed with IP2Location. That historical result is not today’s expected error but it demonstrates why a website’s location estimate cannot diagnose your connection.

How Can You Change Private Relay for One Website or Network?

Start with the smallest scope that matches the symptom. If you need to disable iCloud Private Relay for testing, avoid changing every connection at once.

Test One Website First

For a trusted affected website in Safari:

  1. Open the Page Menu beside the address field.
  2. Select Show IP Address. In newer interfaces, open Privacy & Security first.
  3. Retry the affected page or sign in.

The website can now see your original IP address, and your network provider can see which site you are browsing. Private Relay remains enabled for other websites.

Restore protection by leaving the website or closing its Safari tab. The temporary exception ends then. If the option is missing, check for an available iOS update before using broader controls.

Test the Selected Cellular Line

If you use two SIMs, start by checking which line is set for mobile data on your iPhone before changing any settings.

For newer iOS versions with multiple lines:

  1. Open Settings → Cellular, sometimes labelled Mobile Service.
  2. Under SIMs, select the line supplying your travel data.
  3. Turn Limit IP Address Tracking off temporarily.

For iOS 18 or earlier, look under Cellular Data Options. Single-line configurations can also use that path.

Retry the same task, then turn Limit IP Address Tracking back on for that line. Be careful not to change your home line while testing travel data.

Test the Current Wi-Fi Network

Open Settings → Wi-Fi → More Info beside the connected network. Temporarily turn Limit IP Address Tracking off, repeat the test, then turn it back on.

This Wi-Fi preference can apply across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Check that the network’s protection has been restored.

Network-level disabling reduces Safari privacy across that connection. Unlike the website exception, it requires you to restore the toggle yourself.

If multiple services still have no internet access after these checks, work through our step-by-step guide to fixing an eSIM connection with no internet before trying more drastic fixes. Changing Private Relay settings does not remove your eSIM profile, so there is no need to delete it for this test.

What If Only Performance Looks Worse?

Private Relay speed-test results can differ because its secure connection is measured differently from tests using multiple simultaneous connections. A lower score alone does not necessarily indicate slower browsing.

After a controlled comparison, check for other causes of slow travel eSIM data, including connection issues unrelated to Private Relay, before restoring protection.

How Does iCloud Private Relay Differ from a VPN on a Travel eSIM?

The useful iCloud Private Relay vs VPN comparison concerns traffic coverage and location behaviour.

FeatureiCloud Private RelayVPN
Traffic scopeSafari, DNS and insecure HTTP app trafficTraffic routed through the VPN; coverage depends on configuration
Location behaviourPreserves approximate regional locationUses the configured exit location; access remains service-dependent
SubscriptionIncluded with iCloud+Depends on the VPN service

Neither provides cellular coverage, anonymises account activity, nor guarantees access to restricted websites.

Takeaways

Before your trip, confirm your destination, device compatibility and plan coverage. After any test, restore Private Relay and the relevant network toggle. Record which change helped so a temporary sign-in workaround does not become a forgotten privacy setting.
